The Base Plan

A base plan incorporates all relevant information gathered from the client interview, site survey, site analysis, plot plan, and the site plan. To a large extent the base plan dictates the accuracy, appropriateness and sustainability of the completed design. A base plan is frequently supported by a document or program that provides additional information not found on the plan itself.

How the Base Plan Affects Sustainability:

Inaccuracy in a base plan will be reflected on the completed landscape design and ultimately the installed landscape.

Incorrect base plans frequently result in easements that are not honored, incorrect property line locations, and improper plant material selection to name a few.

Incorrect information can drastically alter the accuracy of the completed landscape. For this reason, it is extremely important that the base plan information is correct.

For more information on sustainable landscape design, please see The Landscape Design Sequence.

The base plan should summarize the needs of the client while incorporating the designers' knowledge and experience in gathering and organizing information.
